As a pilot and demonstration unit of Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU)\nto explore new mechanisms for training of internationalized talents and coordination\non scientific research, Lehn Institute of Functional Materials (LIFM) was\njointly founded by Jean-Marie Lehn, a French scientist and Nobel Prize winner, Dieter\nFenske, an academician of German Academy of Sciences, Prof. Xiaoming Chen, an\nacademician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the like in 2010. The\nestablishment of LIFM was facilitated by President Ningsheng Xu through\ncoordination and promotion, winning the attention and support of SYSU’s leaders\nand functional departments at every level. In 2012, the grand kick-off ceremony\nof LIFM was held and attended by the leadership of the People\u2019s Government of\nGuangdong Province, Department of Education of Guangdong Province,\nAdministration of Foreign Experts Affairs of Guangdong Province and Foreign\nAffairs Office, People’s Government of Guangdong Province, Consul-General of\nConsulate General of France in Guangzhou, Vice-Consul of Consulate General of\nGermany in Guangzhou, Director of Guangzhou Office of Deutscher Akademischer\nAustausch Dienst (DAAD) and other guests, while the International Advanced\nFunctional Materials Symposium was held and attended by dozens of top scholars\nfrom the U.S., Germany, France, Switzerland, Hong Kong and Mainland China. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the development of\nnearly two years upon establishment, LIFM obtained great support and investment\nfrom SYSU, Department of Education of Guangdong Province and the People\u2019s\nGovernment of Guangdong Province, introduced a number of scholars with international\ninfluence, held several high-level academic exchanges, finished the preliminary\nestablishment of a world-class instrument platform and research office,\npromoted the internationalized talent training mode steadily, and enabled a talent\ntraining and scientific research working mechanism featuring \u00ab\u00a0a two-way\ninteraction mode with regular dispatch of foreign PIs to LIFM, assistance and\nguidance of respective supervisors and research assistants as well as regular external\ntraining of graduates and postdoctoral researchers\u00a0\u00bb to take shape. By\npromoting standardization and institutionalization in such aspects as\nscientific research team building, introduction of high-quality talents,\nestablishment of laboratory and instrument sharing platform, international collaboration\non scientific research and joint training of graduates, LIFM developed a\nrelatively strong international influence. So far, an international joint\nresearch structure with a high-quality and internationalized research team,\nadvanced instruments and devices, regular training of internationalized\ntalents, extensive exchange and cooperation all over the world as well as\nstrong domestic and international influence has shaped up, supporting the\ndevelopment of first-level disciplines such as Chemistry and Materials, playing\nan important role in the implementation of National Basic Research Program of\nChina (973 Program) and other significant research plans through international\ncooperation and international influence as a remarkable achievement, which is\ndeclared and organized by State Key Laboratory and 2011 Collaborative\nInnovation Center respectively, and making important contributions to SYSU’s\nglobal ranking in respect of Chemistry and talent introduction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research Directions<\/strong>: In light of national and local demands in such\nstrategic high-tech fields as energy, environment and materials, LIFM\nestablishes six research directions including Supramolecular Chemistry,\nMaterials Chemistry, Nanochemistry, Energy and Catalytic Chemistry, Photochemistry\nand Materials as well as Frontiers in Crystal Engineering, and engages J-M Lehn,\na Nobel Prize winner from University of Strasbourg, D. Fenske, an academician of\nGerman Academy of Sciences from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, M. Mayor, the\nDirector of Natural Sciences Committee of University of Basel, H.Gr\u00fctzmacher\nfrom Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), a top university in Europe, Vivian\nWing-Wah Yam, an academician from University of Hong Kong, J. Research Team and Talent Introduction<\/strong>: In addition to the said PIs,\nLIFM engages some internationally recognized scholars to be visiting professors\nand adjunct professors, including Jean-Pierre Sauvage, a Nobel Prize winner and\nacademician of French Academy of Sciences, Prof. Joe Hongcai Zhou from Texas\nA&M University and Prof. Mihail-Dumitru Barboiu from European Institute of\nMembranes, who was awarded the Recruitment Program of Global Experts (Short\nTerm) in 2015; Olaf Fuhr and Andreas Echhofer from Karlsruhe Institute of\nTechnology to be adjunct associate professors and research assistants to foreign\nPIs; and some other high-quality Chinese researchers including Chengyong Su (Distinguished\nYoung Scholar and Yangtze River Scholar), Mingliang Tong (Distinguished Young\nScholar and Yangtze River Scholar), Jiepeng Zhang (Distinguished Young Scholar\nand Yangtze River Scholar) and Prof. Daibin Kuang (Pearl River Scholar) to\nassist in various scientific researches, for the purpose of strengthening the\nresearch team. In 2014, Vivian Wing-Wah Yam, an academician from University of\nHong Kong and her assistant Dr. Yongguang Li were introduced. Establishment of Instrument Sharing Platform and Research Office<\/strong>: Supported\nby SYSU and Guangdong Province, a public instrument platform and high-standard research\noffice, the worth of which is more than RMB 30 million, with advanced equipment\nand complete functions has taken shape. The laboratory zone of LIFM covers an\narea of about 600 square meters, comprising 3 synthesis labs and 5 instrument\nrooms. So far,\nLIFM’s foreign supervisors have recruited 9 postdoctoral researchers and 30\ndoctoral students, where 4 postdoctoral researchers and 12 doctoral students\nhave been sent abroad in succession for joint training, 2 foreign postdoctoral\nresearchers, 4 postdoctoral researchers graduating from foreign well-known\nuniversities and 1 foreign exchange student. Besides, with good solubility and low synthesis\ncost, these single-molecule white-light materials have promising application. So far, a\npublic instrument platform with advanced equipment and complete functions for\nsharing on and off campus has taken shape, serving as a large instrument\nplatform of the School of Chemistry, which is the most advanced and open one\nsupporting the development of first-level disciplines regarding Chemistry and\nhigh-quality scientific research. Furthermore, a zone covering an area of\nnearly 600 square meters integrates a lab, which is equipped with\nstate-of-the-art instruments, and an office, supporting the scientific\nresearches run by LIFM’s foreign PI team and the preparations for scientific\nresearch. At present, the regular scientific research, talent training,\nmanagement and operation of LIFM are all financed by itself, using the funds\ngranted to Prof. Lehn through Guangdong Province: Program for Leading Talents\nIntroduction (RMB 5 million) and Program for Foreign Experts Introduction (RMB\n760,000) and 111 Project; NSFC Funds, National Postdoctoral Science Funds, NSFC\nResearch Fund for International Young Scientists and other national and local\nfunds for international students won by LIFM’s young instructors, postdoctoral\nresearchers and doctoral students; and various national and local funds\nconferred on LIFM’s Chinese professors. So far, a large public instrument\nplatform and labs have been put in operation; LIFM’s foreign supervisors have\nenrolled more than 20 doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers; and\nmutual visits between Chinese and foreign researchers as well as the joint\ntraining of graduates have been carried out comprehensively. Furthermore, LIFM will\ncontinue to strengthen the team building for every research direction, improve\nthe public instrument platform, enhance lab and administrative management,\ndevelop an institutionalized, standardized and internationalized operating\nmechanism, build an \u00ab\u00a0Internation as well as Hong Kong, Macao & Taiwan\nScience and Technology Cooperation Innovation Platform in Universities in\nGuangdong Province\u00a0\u00bb, apply for \u00ab\u00a0International Science and Technology\nCooperation Base of Guangdong Province\u00a0\u00bb and \u00ab\u00a0Joint International\nLaboratory of the Ministry of Education\u00a0\u00bb, strive to shape an international\ncooperation platform at provincial and national level, establish material\npartnership with foreign high-quality scientists, strive for the study abroad\nprograms, international cooperation programs and support to international major\ncooperation provided by Guangdong Province, State Administration of Foreign\nExperts Affairs, Ministry of Education, National Natural Science Foundation of\nChina and other authorities, organize high-quality scientific research and\ntraining of graduates and young talents effectively, and develop into a\ndemonstration unit for internationalized scientific research cooperation and\ntalent training.
